Keep Calm – Dr Sharie Coombes

Stars: ****

There are a few stories that have been released during the coronavirus pandemic to help explain what it is which is brilliant for children (and adults!) as they can begin to understand what they need to navigate. However, ‘Keep Calm’ not only explains what Covid-19 is but begins to give tools to manage feelings both during and after this experience.

After giving a brief, but detailed, description of the pandemic, the book starts with some clear instructions which detail to children how they can use the book in a way that might help them. It talks to them in a way that makes the reader feel valued; they’re not being spoken to as a child, but as someone who wants and needs to understand the happenings of the world around them.

Alongside this, the book is packed with facts and information which explores -alongside the obvious – anxiety, stress and what it means to be calm. To have knowledge is, as they say, to have power, and this allows children to feel empowered with their own tools to manage their feelings. It teaches them not to shy away from their emotions but to embrace them.

Each activity is designed really well. Instructions are clear and friendly leading the reader through the task step-by-step. Illustrations either show how to complete it, or add detail to the explanation. They aren’t just for children either! There are some really interesting ways to reflect or relax included which were fun to try out!

Whether you’re a teacher or a parent, this is a worthwhile addition to your collection!
