Space Oddity – Christopher Edge

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jake finds his dad embarrassing. I mean, we all do, don’t we? But his dad seems to go out of his way to create situations that make Jake want the ground to swallow him up. There was that time he turned green, as well as turning up during his class performance as part of the performance.

To try and make amends, Jake’s dad takes him on an adventure getaway to Middlewich Forest. 12 years ago a UFO crashed here and the group leader has loved incorporating it into the activities! However, when they get there, nothing goes quite to plan. Jake isn’t just left wondering if his dad is like everyone else’s, but he also starts to wonder if there’s something more in the universe than just Earth.

Are we really alone in the universe?

Before reading Christopher Edge books, you’d probably hear me saying I don’t read science-fiction, or enjoy the genre. I think this was probably because my dad always tried to get me to watch Star Wars, Star Trek and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy when I was younger, none of which I liked! However, this isn’t all science-fiction is; Christopher’s books incorporate science in an accessible way whilst still having a meaningful storyline.

Jake is relatable; I’m sure we can all think of a moment when our parents might have embarrassed us and be able to empathise with him! Seeing the relationship develop and change with his dad through the book was heart-warming. They had to go on an adventure together, but especially with everything that has happened this year, it’s a great message about how important family can be.

Once I started reading this, I didn’t want to put it down!
