The Humiliations of Welton Blake – Alex Wheatle

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Carmella McKenzie has long been the girl that Welton has had his eye on. She’s popular and pretty and to be fair, probably way out of his league. But when he asked her out, she said yes! Welton starts to think life might be looking up…until a chain of events makes him feel life might not quite be as lucky as he first thought! Life is about to go very wrong.

If you aren’t sure what Barrington Stoke books are brilliant for, they make accessible books for a range of reading ages with appropriate content and topic. Until a couple of years ago, I had not heard of their books. In fact, it was Twitter where I discovered their vast range of titles from a huge variety of authors! The Humiliations of Welton Blake is another example of their titles which allow children who might find reading a little more difficult, to still find a book which is suited to their interests and life experience.

I’m sure many of us can relate to Welton’s bad day(s)! Sometimes just as you think your luck is changing, it turns right back around. I can see so many readers feeling totally seen by his story! Not only is the content written in the accessible way that Barrington Stoke are so well known for, but it is also funny and realistic too.

Wheatle has created a main character that is relatable; often you read stories with poor luck and think ‘surely nothing else can go wrong’ and then roll your eyes when something extreme happens next. With this, it could happen to anyone, which I personally think is what makes the book so engaging. Some of the Star Wars references went over my head (sorry, I’ve never been a fan despite the desperate years of my dad trying!) but I could still appreciate how much extra depth they gave to Welton.
