Just Like Me – Louise Gooding

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just like me is a fantastic non-fiction book which looks at some incredible inspirational figures. In it, we see that despite our difference, we are all special and stereotypes should, and can, be broken!

As Louise tells us in the introduction, ‘We are all special, we are all unique, we are all ‘different; not less’.

For the blog tour, we were asked to focus on a particular individual mentioned within the book. Today, I’ve chosen ‘Warwick Davis’. Not only is he is one of my favourite film series (Harry Potter is my go-to watch! Just don’t get me started on the ending of the films…!) but I love his positive attitude to life. He always has such a sunny disposition and is so intelligent, funny and witty. In my ‘celebrity dinner party’ lists – you know the game! – he’s always in my top 5.

Warwick was born in England in 1970, where his parents were told by doctors he was born with ‘Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia Congenita’ which is a very rare form of dwarfism. He was encouraged, as a child, to be confident and develop a good sense of humour to ensure that other children would not feel they could bully him.

His confidence and natural talent meant that after he auditioned for a role in Star Wars, he hugely impressed George Lucas and then got cast in even more amazing projects. Warwick, since then, added many strings to his bow. He is such a role model to young people.

Alongside Warwick, there are inspirational figures from a wide range of areas: sports, arts, science, campaigning, modelling and business. In this book, there will be a role model every child will feel they can connect to or aspire to follow in their footsteps. For me, the best part of this book was the wide variety of not only familiar faces, but less known ones too.

Each of them are illustrated fantastically by Angel Chang, Caterina delli Carrri, cathyhookey and Melissa Iwai. They each have a stand-out artistic style which really brings each person to life, in a unique and individual way. I can see some fantastic pieces of artwork, and writing, being inspired by Louise’s book!
