Fledgling – Lucy Hope

Stars: ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Perfect for fans of: Lucy Strange

Cassie sees signs everywhere; the owls are just another. The problem is, Cassie doesn’t know what they mean. With a mother who is a self-obsessed opera singer and a father who is a taxidermist, life has never been what you’d call ‘normal’. However, things are only going to get stranger now that it seems forces are gathering, and soon she will have to make decisions which she never knew she would need to make. Then, a cherub arrives and, along with her friend Raphael, Cassie is about to be taken on an adventure full of soaring twists and turns.

I was intrigued by the premise of this book as it sounded so unlike anything I have previously read. It had me gripped from the start; there were constant twists and turns right until the end which I did not see coming. The interaction of the characters had a mystery to it, and it was clear we were only to find out the true plot once the author decided it was time. Hope has created a gothic fantasy, full of atmosphere and intrigue – the tension she builds really absorbs the reader into the world she has created.

The dynamic between Cassie and Raphael was really interesting. I really liked seeing their supportive relationship; as Raphael goes through some unexpected experiences Cassie is there for him, while still being able to help her find her own answers. It counterbalances the dark storylines, showing how love and hope can help triumph.

This was an exciting debut and I can’t wait to see what comes next from this new author! If you like the sound of this book, buy it here.
